Shower tray and upstand resealing

Shower tray resealing renews the silicone on the upstand, the wall joint, and the front lip. Book it when the bead has split and the tray is not cracked. A waste leaking under the tray is identified and is not quoted as a bead. Send a photo on the quote form, or WhatsApp the same details.

Shower tray upstand being resealed with sanitary silicone

Who it is for

Who books a tray reseal

Households with water on the floor at the front of the tray. People who can see a gap between the upstand and the tile. Anyone told “just silicone it” when the waste may be the leak. Stone-resin, acrylic, and ceramic trays are in scope if the body of the tray is sound.

Variants

The fittings this page covers

Upstand to tile

The vertical joint on the raised edge of the tray.

Front lip

The edge you step over, where a split bead dumps water on the floor.

Riser kit

The extra joint where a tray sits on a riser and the panel meets the tray.

Waste versus bead

Water that appears under the tray with a sound bead is the waste or the trap, not this reseal.

Scope

Included, and the jobs we will not call a reseal

Included in the visit

  • A check of the upstand, the front lip, and whether water is under the tray
  • Cut-out of the tray beads that have failed
  • Sanitary silicone tooled back toward the tray
  • A clear “not the bead” if the waste is weeping

Outside this visit

  • Replacing a cracked or collapsed tray
  • Changing the waste, trap, or shower pump
  • Building a new riser
  • Tanking a floor that has no tray

How it is done

On the day

  1. 1

    Bead or waste

Floor water at the lip is often the bead. Water only under the tray, with a dry lip, is often the waste.

  2. 2

    Cut the upstand joint

Old silicone comes off the acrylic or resin without scoring the tray.

  3. 3

    Tool a new bead

The agreed edges are resealed in sanitary silicone.

  4. 4

    Cure

Keep water off the new bead for 24 hours. That is the minimum cure before a shower, bath, or basin is used again.

Symptoms

What you can see before you book

Puddle at the front

The lip bead has split or was never bonded to the tray.

Gap at the upstand

You can see tile or daylight at the joint. Water tracks behind the tray lip.

Drip under the tray only

Look at the waste before paying for silicone.

Crack in the tray floor

No bead closes a crack through the tray body.

Quote

What changes the price

The job is quoted. These are the factors, not a menu of fixed prices.

Edges

Three walls and a front lip is the usual tray. A riser panel joint adds length.

Tray material

Acrylic needs a slower cut than a ceramic tray edge.

Wrong fault

If the visit becomes a leak check because the waste is at fault, you are not sold a bead that cannot work.

After the visit

Prep, cure, and how long it lasts

Do not stand a bottle on the fresh lip bead. Keep the tray dry for 24 hours. After that, the waste still needs its own seal if that was the leak we flagged.

An upstand joint lasts when the tray does not flex away from the wall and the silicone was bonded to a clean edge. A tray that creaks underfoot will open the front lip again.

DIY

When a tube is the wrong tool

The front lip is where thick DIY beads sit and then peel. If water is under the tray rather than over the lip, another tube will not reach the waste.

Questions

Questions about shower tray resealing

Do you reseal shower trays?

Yes. Upstands, front lips, and tray-to-tile joints on sound acrylic, stone-resin, and ceramic trays. A cracked tray is not resealed as if it were a bead.

How do I tell a tray bead leak from a waste leak?

Water over the front lip, or a visible gap at the upstand, fits the bead. Water only underneath, especially when the bead looks intact, fits the waste. Say which one you see on the quote form.

Can you reseal a tray and a screen together?

Yes. Say so on the form and it is quoted as one shower visit. This page is the tray and upstand. The screen joints are covered under shower resealing and can be booked together.

How long before the tray can be showered on?

Twenty-four hours after the bead is finished.
